Moong dal curry is a very healthy and yummy side for rotis as well as rice. I like this curry along with hot steamed rice with few drops of ghee over it. This dal is rich in protein and loaded with lots of nutrients. My mom used to make this curry often as it can be made in no time and also so good for health. It is called as pachai pasi paruppu in Tamil. You can make this so quick ,15 mins is more enough. And the cool thing is there is no need to soak the dal . Just wash with lots of water and pressure cook and make your curry . Normally I use sprouted mung beans for the same recipe . And I love that with fluffy pooris . Try this simple yet yummy side with your rotis / pooris / rice and let me know your views….
Ingredients
Green gram / Whole moong dal - 200 gms
Onion – 1 chopped
Tomato – 1 chopped
Green chilli – 1 chopped
Ginger garlic paste – 1tsp
Turmeric powder / Manjal thool – 1/4 tsp
Chilli powder / Milagai thool – 1/2 tsp
Corriander powder / Kothamalli thool – 1 tsp
Garam masala powder – 1/4 tsp
Cumin seeds / Jeeragam – 1/2 tsp
Asafoetida / Perungaya thool – a pinch
Dry red chillies – 3
Corriander leaves – few chopped , for garnishing
Oil – 1 tbsp
Salt to taste
Preparation
Wash the moong dal and pressure cook it with enough water and salt for 2-3 whistles . ( If there is any water left with the dal , don’t throw away , use it for curry. Take care not to make them mushy ) . Grab your needed ingredients.
Heat oil in a kadai . Add the cumin seeds and wait for spluttering . Then add the red chillies and asafoetida and fry for few seconds . Add the chopped onions and green chillies and fry till they turn soft and transparent .
Add the ginger garlic paste and fry for 2 mins or till the raw smell goes off.
Now throw in the chopped tomatoes and fry till mushy.
Add the turmeric , chilli and coriander powders and give a good mix.
Add the cooked dal with enough water and required salt and mix well ( Don’t forget that salt is added at the time of cooking the dal too , so add a little ) .
Allow to boil and keep in low medium flame for another 10 mins stirring in between .
Add the garam masala powder and give a mix and boil for 2 more mins .
Garnish with corriander leaves and switch off the flame.
Yummy and healthy curry.
