Today’s recipe is a easy comforting dish ,Snake gourd Kootu .Kootu is the combination of veggies and lentils and one of the famous side dish in southern part of India. This is my favourite dish. Its so good for digestion and a very healthy side dish.I find it perfect with poondu puli kulambu and can be had with curd rice / rotis / even plain rice. The ingredients and the procedure is so simple and can be made in no time.My mom will prepare this kootu using moong dal too.If you like then add moong dal instead channa.Lets see the preparation…
Ingredients
SnakeGourd / Pudalangai – 1 (200gms)
Onion – 1/2 chopped finely
Tomato – 1 chopped (small sized)
Green chilli – 1
Split chick peas / Channa dal / Kadalai Paruppu – 50 gms or a handful
Coconut – 2 tsp grated
Salt to taste
For Tempering
Oil – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds / Kadugu – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal / Ulunthamparuppu – 1/2 tsp
Dry red chillies / Milagai vathal – 3
Asafoetida / Perungaya thool – a generous pinch
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Preparation
Wash the channa dal and soak it for 10 mins.Remove the skin of the snakegourd by gently scrapping it with a knife or a stainless steel spoon.
Scoop the inner seeds out and throw it away. Now clean and cut the veggie into small slices.
Take a pressure cooker add the channa dal , sliced snake gourd and slited green chilli with 1 cup of water and cook it for 4 whistles.Let the pressure goes by itself and open the lid and set it aside
Heat a kadai with a tsp of oil and splutter the mustard seeds and uraddal and add the asafoetida and curry leaves and fry for few seconds.
Throw in the onions and fry till golden brown .
And add the tomato and fry for 2 more mins or till mushy.
Now add the cooked channa dal and snake gourd mixture and mix well.
Add turmeric powder and required salt and mix well and allow it to boil for 3 more mins.
Now mix in the shredded coconut and simmer it for few mins and switch off the flame.
Serve with any spicy kulambu. It tastes good even with rotis.
