Vendakkai / Okra Thayir Pachadi

A simple thayir pachadi with okra is  our menu today.I prefer ladies finger for pachadi but red pumpkin , ridge gourd can also be made as a thayir pachadi. This is a easy dish but need some patience because of the sliminess of this veggie. This is a perfect match with puli kulambu / tamarind based spicy gravy. And its so healthy too.You all know that ladies finger is so good for your memory power ,especially for kids.I  have eaten raw ladies finger when i was a kid but not now. This is my sons favourite veg.But he likes okra sambar the most. I hope you will definitely love it…Lets see the preparation…

Ingredients

Ladies Finger / Okra / Vendakkai – 300 gms

Curd / Thayir – 1/2 cup or 5 tbsp

Chilli powder / Milagai thool – 1/2 tsp

Turmeric powder / Manjal thool – 1/2 tsp

Dry red chillies – 6 ( depends on your spice level )

Mustard seeds / Kadugu – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal  / Ulunthamparuppu – 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves – a spring

Asafoetida  / Perungaya thool – a pinch

Salt to taste

Oil – 3 tsp

Preparation

Wash the veggies and dry it completely and chop them to thin pieces.Grab all your ingredients.

Heat oil in a kadai and splutter mustard seeds and urad dal.Add curry leaves , dry red chillies and asafoetida and saute for a min.

Add chilly and turmeric powder and fry till the sliminess goes off and turn slight brown in colour.

Now add the required salt (add salt when the veggie is completely fried ,if you add initially it will make the veggie soggy) and mix well. And switch off the flame.( If you like to have this as a poriyal then skip the following step and simply add 2 tsp of shredded coconut and mix well and serve as a vendakkai / okra poriyal).

Beat the curd with little salt. Let the veggie come to room temperature and add the beaten curd to the fried okra and mix well.Serve this curd / thayir pachadi  with any spicy kulambu / gravy.

I served this with Venthaya kulambu (will post soon) and scrambled egg.
