தக்காளி சட்னி / Tomato Chutney

Tomato Chutney is a very delicious combo for Idlis and Dosas . Chutney recipes are staple side dishes for breakfast in South India and this is my mum’s version which I like most . I have already posted Onion Tomato Chutney without coconut , click on the link to check it . In this tomato chutney , my mum used to add a little coconut and that really enhances the taste . This is so easy to make and tastes wonderful .  Hope you all love this simple chutney . Lets see how to prepare it….

Tomato chutney

Ingredients

Tomato – 3 , chopped

Onion – 1 big sized , chopped

Split Bengal gram (Chana dal) / Kadalai paruppu– 1 tsp

Coconut – 1 tbsp , grated

Dry red chillies – 2

Salt to taste

Oil – 2 tsp

For Tempering

Oil – 1 tsp  ( preferably Sesame oil )

Mustard seeds / Kadugu – 1/2 tsp

Urad dal / Ulunthamparuppu – 1/2 tsp

Curry leaves – 1 spring

Asafoetida – a generous pinch

Preparation

Grab the needed ingredients .

Heat oil in a kadai  and add the red chillies and channa dal and few curry leaves and fry till colour change . Take care not to burn them.

Add the chopped onion and fry till soft ( will take 3 mins , add a little salt to make the onions cook faster ).

Add the chopped tomato and needed salt and cook till it turns mushy and switch off the flame.

Let the onion tomato mixture comes to room temperature .

Transfer to a blender along with the coconut and grind to a smooth paste.

Check for salt and transfer the chutney to a bowl .

Now heat a  tsp of  sesame oil and splutter mustard and urad dal . Add a pinch of asafoetida and curry leaves and fry for few seconds and switch off.Add this tadka to the chutney and give a good mix and serve with idli / dosa / roti.

Notes :

  • Adjust the spiciness up to your taste.
  • Always add a little coconut to get a good taste to the chutney .
  • I used sesame oil for tempering as I love its unique flavour . But you can replace it with any cooking oil .
  • I have not used curry leaves as it was not in stock when I prepared the chutney . Don’t forget to use as it gives a nice flavour .
