Spinach Dal / Pasalai keerai Paruppu kadaiyal / Palak dal
A spicy dal combined with greens that goes very well with steamed rice is my recipe today.This is a yummy authentic dal.Spinach is full of nutrition , a good source of iron and loaded with lots of vitamins and minerals.I try to include greens in my diet as much as possible.This recipe is very simple and easy to make.Here goes the recipe…
Spinach – 1 bunch
Toor dal / Thuvaram parupu – 100 gms
Onion – 1 chopped
Tomato – 1 small sized,chopped
Green Chilli – 1
Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
Chilli powder – 1/4 tsp (optional )
Oil – 1 tsp
Salt as needed
Mustard seeds / Kadugu – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal / Ulunthamparuppu – 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds / Jeeragam – 1/2 tsp
Dry Red Chillies – 2
Asafoetida / Perungayam – a generous pinch
Garlic cloves – 2 chopped finely
Curry leaves – 1 spring
Wash the spinach several times in water and chop them.Wash the dal too.Take a cooker add dal,onion,tomato and green chilli and spinach. Add turmeric and chilli powder .And add 1/2 cup water and mix well .
Close the lid and keep it on the stove.After a whistle keep in medium flame and cook for 10 mins and switch off.When the pressure goes off open it.
Heat oil in a kadai and add the ingredients under temering and wait till splutter .Add the chopped garlic and fry till it turns golden .
Then add the cooked spinach dal and add required salt and mix it well and simmer it for two more mins and switch off . Serve with hot steamed rice and a tsp of ghee over it , it tastes heavenly .
