Nattu Kozhi Kulambu / Country Chicken Gravy

This ia an authentic South Indian Gramathu/village gravy.  The recipes prepared with Country chicken are excellent in taste.  Whether it is kulambu/gravy or varuval/fry it tastes heavenly.  This was our sunday lunch and it was a big hit.  This Gravy is prapared with sesame oil and it gives a wonderful flavour to this dish.  In my place I can't find it so I am using  British Country chicken / Cornish hen.  But the taste of the  real country style chicken is extraordinary. Now to the recipe...

Ingredients

Chicken - 1kg
Sesame Oil / Nallennai - 4 tsp
Cinnaman / Pattai - 3 small pieces
Fennel Seeds / Sombu - 1tsp
Star anise / Annasi poo - 1
Curry leaves - 2 springs
Onion -  1/2 sliced
Tomato - 1 Small sized Chopped
Garlic Cloves - 3 Chopped
Tuurmeric Powder / Manjal Thool - 1/2tsp
Chilli Powder - 1 tspn
Salt as needed

Ingredients For masala

Onion  - 1 sliced
Oil - 1 tbsp
Cumin Seeds / jeragam - 1 tsn
Fennel Seeds / Sombu - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves - 1 Spring
Coconut Slices - 2  or 1 cup grated coconut
Corriander Powder / Kothamalli Thool - 3 tsp

Preparation Of Masala

Heat oil in a kadai.Splutter cumin seeds and fennel seeds and add curry leaves and fry for a min.

Add the onions .And fry till they turn golden .

Switch off the flame and add corriander powder and mix well.

Let it cool down and grind the onion with coconut into a fine paste.Set it aside.

Preparation of  kulambu / Gravy

Clean the chicken properly in lots of water.Heat sesame oil in the Kadai.Add Cinnamon,Fennel Seeds and Star anise.Add the curry leaves .

Throw the onions and garlic cloves fry for few mins.Add the tomato and cook till mushy.

Add the chicken and fry till colour change.Add turmeric powder and chilli powder and mix well.

Then add the grounded masala and salt .

Add 3 cups of water .Let it boil for 10 mins .

Cover the lid and simmer the flame and cook till the meat gets tender and Oil floats on the top.

This is perfect combo with steamed rice. And  tastes best with idli, dosas and roti too.

Notes

* If you like the consistency of the gravy to be watery then add some more water when you are adding the masala  .
